Parts are straightened and repaired as needed.
Preliminary sanding, buffing and polishing to bare metal.
Base layer of Copper is then applied. (Copper is a good base and helps fill pits and imperfections. Chrome finish will last longer with a good base layer of copper.)
Nickel plating is applied. The more nickel applied the more of a deep, mirror finish. Ideal for that desirable decorative chrome finish.
Steps 4 and 5 can be repeated multiple times depending parts condition and type of metal. Parts need to be buffed and polished in between each repeat step.
Chrome plating is applied.
Parts are cleaned and quality checked. Finished product is wrapped in soft foam wrap to protect chrome finish.
Part being hand hammered to remove dings and dents.
Some bumpers need to be pressed back into shape.
Grinding bumper to remove old chrome finish.
Sanding bumper edges to give a smooth finished edge.
We have the proper tools and equipment needed to sand, buff and polish parts smooth. Parts go through multiple steps and procedures. These steps are key to achieve a SHOW CAR CHROME FINISH. These machines put out high RPM which makes them dangerous to work with. An experienced, skilled craftsman is needed to complete this phase of the restoration.
Some parts have fine details. A smaller sanding and polishing tool is needed to prep these types of parts. Picture to the left shows the bare metal rim going through preliminary sanding and polishing. Picture on right shows rim nickel plated. More prep is needed before rim receives final chrome layer. It’s these repeat step and attention to details that gives that final mirror, chrome finish.
Before parts can be plated they need to be placed on a copper hook and wire. Each piece is electroplated. Parts need the proper amount of current to ensure proper adhesion. Picture on right shows parts hanging to dry after being chrome plated.
Parts hanging after being plated with base layer of copper.
The copper and nickel steps will be repeated. The type of metal and the parts starting condition will determine how many times. Picture to the left shows a bumper being polished after receiving its base layer of copper. From here it will go back to copper tank. Once craftsmen feel a good base is applied it will then go to the next step.
Copper Tank: Copper chemistry is blue in color. The part when removed still has that copper penny look. It is common for parts to go through copper stage multiple times.
Nickel Tank: Nickel is applied after the copper stage. This step will also repeat depending the part. The amount of nickel used will determine the depth and luster of the finish. The more nickel
applied the more of a decorative chrome finish. “SHOW CAR FINISH”
Chrome tank: Chroming is the final step. All the repeat steps performed by our skilled craftsman have led to this moment. The chrome chemistry is brown in color. After the part is chrome plated it is rinsed and its beautiful chrome finish will shine for its first time! Picture above showing a grille hanging to dry after being chrome plated. From here the part will be removed from the copper hooks and wires. The part will then need to be cleaned and quality checked. After being checked parts are then wrapped in foam wrap to protect the chrome finish.
Sometimes parts do not pass the quality check. The part will then be stripped of chrome and ran back through until it meets customer specific quality.
The chrome plating process also requires parts to be cleaned thoroughly before layers of plating can be applied. After parts are polished and buffed compound residue oil and debris must be removed. This is needed to ensure proper plating adhesion.
There are different cleaning solutions that we use. Here are some pictures showing some of the different tanks.
